Advanced node 5G Massive MIMO RadioUnit
The customer goal was to have a state-ofthe-
art low-power, multiple-channel 5G
massive MIMO Radio Unit (RU) capable of
operating reliably in demanding
environments.
The power per channel targets were several
times lower than any other systems having
similar RF and processing performance.
Customer Challenge
Customer Challange
The project posed intricate challenges,
demanding extensive digital content to
facilitate a complex 32 channel MIMO
beamformer. This necessitated the use of an
advanced FinFET node; due to this recent
node the RF Front-end, PLL, ADCs and DACs
needed to be developed to meet the
demanding system-level performance and
power requirements.
The fine balance between power efficiency of
the PA and complexity in the design's Digital
Pre-Distortion (DPD) control loop presented a
significant challenge, requiring meticulous
simulation and prototyping efforts.
The 32 RF Tx and Rx channels with demanding
performance requirements, multiple SerDes
and large digital signal processing chain
meant the design was highly complex and a
first-of-a-kind challenge
