Automotive ASIL readyMulti-Processor ArmCortex-M Subsystem
Creation of a configurable multiprocessor Arm
Cortex-M subsystem designed for highvolume
mixed -signal automotive and
industrial ICs, supporting protocols like CAN
(2.0A, 2.0B, CAN FD) and LIN (ISO-17987). The
subsystem supports general-purpose
communication peripherals such as UART, I2C,
SPI, alongside DMA controllers and timers.
Configurable RAM and flash memory sizes are
available, with support for multiple power and
clock domains for provision of both low-power
hibernate and high power performance
modes.
Secure communication is enabled via
EnSilica’s eSi-Crypto encryption Ips while
additional peripherals and application
specific functionality can be added through
an expansion bus on the interface of the
subsystem.
Customer Challenge
Customer Challange
EnSilica’s Cortex-M processor subsystem
enables fast custom IC development by
allowing the customization of both processing
performance and peripherals. The Cortex-M33
is ideal for medium workloads, and the
subsystem leverages EnSilica’s reusable
verification environment to accelerate time to
market. For compliance with ISO 26262 and
IEC 61508 standards, Arm provides a “safety
package” for ASIL/SIL applications, which
includes documentation on failure modes and
safety mechanisms. EnSilica integrates this
data through an FMEDA-based safety analysis
process, achieving the required safety metrics
at the SoC level while ensuring compliance
and reliability in critical applications.

Solution
The EnSilica Cortex-M processor subsystem
enables the development of custom IC’s with
fast time to market. The processing
performance of the subsystem can be tailored
to customer requirements through the
selection and customisation of the selected
Cortex-M processor, the Cortex-M33 is seen as
an ideal candidate for medium workload
applications. The performance of the range of
supported peripherals can also be tailored to
customer requirements through the
customisation of each peripheral. Fast time to
market is supported by reuse of the EnSilica
subsystem verification environment.
Automotive or industrial safety standards
require to perform a safety analysis against
the prescribed safety requirements in order to
introduce the necessary detection or
prevention measures.
For selected Cortex-M processors, Arm provide
the so-called “safety package” for ASIL / SIL
applications, containing a set of
documentation necessary to ensure ISO
26262 / IEC 61508 compliance, like failure
modes description and safety mechanisms.
EnSilica integrates this information through an
FMEDA-based safety analysis process to
obtain the necessary safety metrics at SoC
level, requested by the mentioned standards
