EnSilica opens Design Centre in Sheffield

EnSilica’s new design centre in Sheffield opens tomorrow with six staff with experience in analogue, RF and digital design gained at companies such as CML Microsystems, NXP and Jennic.

The team has previously developed market-leading low-power wireless devices for consumer and industrial applications. EnSilica is looking to recruit engineers in analogue, physical, system-level design, DFT and verification across UK at both graduate and more-senior levels.

The company designs and supplies ASICs for high-tech sectors, including for automotive, medical and satellite communications companies.

The new site adds to EnSilica’s existing headquarters and design facility near Oxford, and its design centres in Wokingham (Berkshire) and Cambridge. The company also has a specialist centre for functional verification and physical design capabilities based in Bangalore, India.

The Sheffield design centre will be headed by John Matthews. “This is a great region and a great city that we feel will help us attract the best talent. Not only do we have a team in place that will foster a strong environment for growth and learning, with the Peaks and Moors on its doorstep, Sheffield gives staff here a great work life balance,” he said.

Sheffield has chip design centres for ARM, Imagination Technologies and Blaize as well as startups such as memory designer SureCore, neuromorphic AI chip developer Opteran and quantum encryption chip developer AegiQ. NXP closed its chip design centre in the city with 50 engineers from the acquisition of Jennic last year.

“We chose Sheffield as it has a great pedigree for innovation, with technology companies such as ARM already established in the area, and with its links to several first-class universities on the doorstep,” said EnSilica CEO, Ian Lankshear.
